The Long and Winding Road, Histories of Aging and Aging Services in America, 2006-2016 (2007)

The aging services industry in America is on the brink of seeing shifts in its processes, technologies and business models due to the prediction that the demographic aged 65 and older will more than double from 2000 to 2030. The forces of cultural, demographic, economic, political and technological change are clearly transforming the industry. But how will these forces unfold and what will their impact be? What will be the implications be for the various industry players?

To help answer these questions, the report turns to what the future may look like in 2016, a future bound by two key uncertainties: 1) consumer behavior, and 2) talent availability. Based on different assumptions about these and other uncertainties, four possible worlds are explored where each scenario includes a thorough review of possible highlights, drivers (how we got here), themes (the world we live in) and strategic imperatives (how we live in this world) in addition to potential newspaper headlines in order to help the reader better envision the diverse possible futures of the industry and determine how organizations might respond to meet the specific challenges presented.
