V. Michael Mavaddat
Executive Vice President, Innovation and Development


Michael Mavaddat is Executive Vice President, Innovation and Development with Decision Strategies International, Inc. and a Senior Fellow in the Mack Center for Technological Innovation at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania. During his consulting career, Mr. Mavaddat has helped clients develop and implement strategies for managing uncertainty, innovation and emerging technologies. His focus is on developing actionable solutions that draw upon leading edge research and his own expertise in scenario planning, strategy, managing innovation, and behavioral decision theory. He has been a consultant and advisor to numerous organizations across numerous industries. His clients include 3Com Corporation, Abbott Laboratories, AAHSA, Bethpage Federal Credit Union, Bristol-Myers Squibb, CASE Corporation, Chase, Ciba-Geigy (Novartis), Cornell University, Defense Logistics Agency, DuPont, Eli Lilly, Endurance, Genentech, General Chemical, Glaxo Smithkline Beecham, Kinecta Credit Union, Knight-Ridder, LIMRA International, Microsoft Corporation, Merrill Lynch, National Grid (UK), New York Life, Pfizer, Progress Software, Siemens, Unocal, UNUM, US Army Corps of Engineers, Wells Fargo, Wyeth Pharmaceuticals.

Prior to his career in management consulting, Mr. Mavaddat developed a broad base of experience in business strategy and management with Bristol-Myers Squibb Company in pharmaceuticals and Western Digital Corporation and GEC-Plessey Company (UK) in electronics. He was CEO of Intelligent Pixels, Inc., a venture-backed optical communications component company, where he successfully led the development of a novel Liquid Crystal-based optical switch. He has a BS in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University, Phi Beta Kappa, BA in Management Engineering/Economics, cum laude, from Claremont McKenna College and an MBA, with distinction, from Cornell University's Johnson School. Mr. Mavaddat has been a speaker at industry conferences and a lecturer at Wharton, Columbia, Duke and Cornell business schools.

He is co-author of a chapter on the role of scenario planning in managing emerging technologies in the book Wharton on Managing Emerging Technologies (Wiley; 2000). His work has been published in Pharmaceutical Executive magazine and other industry journals and publications. Mr. Mavaddat is a member of the Board of Directors of Strategic Radar, Inc. an early-stage strategic monitoring venture. He was a Director/Senior Advisor to the Landmark Capital Corporation (a merchant-banking firm based in Greenwich, CT) where he was actively involved in evaluating, investing in, and managing new venture opportunities at Landmark. He is a member of The Council of Communications Advisors and a founding member of the Angel Exchange - an angel investor network.
